Easy 5-minute Avocado Toast Base

With avocado toast, the key to creating the perfect piece full of flavor lays in a few simple principles:

Buy good break and toast it well

Choosing the right bread is key to success in avocado toast. Some breads are too tough, some are too soft, and some just downright taste awful mixed with avocado! My favorite two breads to use are Trader Joe’s Organic Seeded Bread or Ezekiel 4:9 Bread. I typically opt for Ezekiel bread because of the health benefits of eating sprouted grains, but that’s a whole other Ted Talk I’ll write a post on one day. :)

Pick the perfect avocado

I can’t stress this enough - picking the perfectly ripe avocado is the key to success when making avocado toast. There is nothing worse than opening an avocado only to be let down by seeing brown spots. No, these don’t necessarily taste different, but an overripe avocado can turn you off and put a sour taste in your mouth because of the way it looks. When selecting avocados, go for ones that are slightly mushy on the outside, but still hard enough that you couldn’t squish it with your bare hand. If you do run into any brown spots after opening your avocado, scoop those out and discard before using.

Go for full grained sea salt vs. fine grained salt

This is also a very important part of creating the most flavorful avocado toast. Fine grain salt doesn’t pack the flavor punch that biting into a small “chunk” of salt does. Just trust me, this will take your avocado toast flavor level from beginner to expert. I like to use the Spice Lab Himalayan Pink Salt.

We’re going back to the basics with today’s featured food: Avocado Toast. As one of instagram’s most photographed foods, avocado toast has become a restaurant’s staple menu item. With Covid, some people may not want to go out and instead, create their own from home! This is something that I make every week as it is so tasty and there are many ways to mix it up so it never gets boring! Let me preface this and say I am giving you the framework of avocado toast so you can go out and create your own variation because with this base, you can’t go wrong!

Now that we’ve created the “framework” for perfect avocado toast, let’s talk about some variations to personalize your toast!

Add Garlic: If you’re like me and love garlic, you already add it to everything else you cook, so this is a no-brainer. However, knowing some people don’t feel the same for my vampire-away food, I left it off of the base recipe.

Add fresh leafy herbs: I pretty much eat tomatoes at least once a day and normally, I add a dash of italian seasoning to them because a little bit goes a long way and you can’t really' go wrong with it! you can also add basil, cilantro, parsley or really anything that fancies you!

Add protein: When I make avocado toast, I am normally eating it for breakfast or lunch so I need to add a little protein to keep me full for longer, however, seeing as I don’t eat a lot of meat/animal products, I often opt for eggs. Yes, this is an animal product, but I consider myself for the most part an ovopescatarian, meaning I only eat fish and eggs, not cow products or anything else. Eggs are a great source of protein, and I love to take some of the cholesterol out (healthy heart please) and just use the egg whites.

Add different seasonings: Since we’re already all basic here and eat avocado toast, let’s just take our basic level up a notch and add some of Trader Joe’s everything bagel seasoning. This isn’t something I do every time I make it, but I do it maybe 1/4 of the time to get a different flavor.

Finally, EXPERIMENT: You really can’t go wrong with what you add to your avocado toast once you get the perfect base. You have a hint of lime, healthy fats from avocado, spice from the crushed red pepper and sriracha, and anything else on top of that will just be an added bonus. You never know until you try, right? You’re only one step away from creating your favorite food, so give it a go and let me know your thoughts!

Enjoy!
